Press Release Checklist Andrew Bush Vector Portraits April 16 - May 23, 2009 Andrew Bush's seventh solo exhibition with the gallery is a reprise of our 1992 exhibition entitled Vector Portraits and corresponds with the publication of a monograph entitled Drive by Yale University Press. The book includes an interview by Jeff Rosenheim, curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will present a selection of six large scale and three small scale car portraits. Bush, a graduate of Pomona College with an MFA from Yale University moved to Los Angeles in the mid 1980s and became fascinated by the car culture of southern California. He eventually devised a method of working whereby he attached a large format camera to the passenger side of his car and using a shutter release captured fellow drivers as they sped along the freeways. John Russell wrote glowingly of the work in The New York Times when it was exhibited in a 1991 summer group show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with Larry Sultan and Philip Lorca di Corcia. Russell summed up his observations with the opinion "this is a photographer whom we need to have around." The subjects of the portraits represent a cross section of the American public; a middle-aged man happily cruising along the coast in his white Porsche, a young Hispanic male behind the wheel of a decommissioned Yellow Cab, and a sexy young blonde woman in a blue car, her head thrown back in a twilight landscape. The car becomes an extension of the portrait. Bush's first major photographic project, initiated while in graduate school was an in depth photographic study of an Irish country house called Bonnettstown Hall. Other series have included Envelopes, Prop Portraits of individuals with their flea market findings and an installation project involving Derrida's library. All of these disparate projects have a common preoccupation with how people are defined by themselves and others by their possessions, surroundings and furnishings. Several works from these earlier series will be displayed in the second gallery. The Vector Portraits have been exhibited broadly in group and solo shows including Worlds Away, New Suburban Landscapes organized by the Walker Art Center, Surrounding Interiors: Views inside the Car at the Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College, and Ich Bin Mein Auto at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden. Bush's work is in many prominent public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the George Eastman House in Rochester. This exhibition is organized in association with the Yossi Milo Gallery which will mount a concurrent show and feature an additional selection of Vector Portaits in a smaller format.
